Well, it’s official – this post’s title is a terrible play on my favorite “Harry Potter” novel and, more importantly, the Elon Phoenix are set to join the CAA in 2014-15, as announced yesterday by Commissioner Tom Yeager. After getting back from Elon last night, I was inspired to do a little research on the university and its football program. There’s a lot to learn about our newest member, and I thought I’d share a quick bit of what I found here along with some occasional personal commentary.

CAA Football ranks atop the nation with four league players named to the College Football Performance Awards’ 2013 FCS Wide Receiver Award Watch List on Monday. New Hampshire’s R.J. Harris, William and Mary’s Tre McBride and Richmond’s Stephen Barnette and Ben Edwards were among the 34 standouts selected to this year’s list.

Five players from around CAA Football were named to the College Football Performance Award’s 2013 FCS Running Back Watch List on Monday. The preliminary watch list’s 33 members included Stony Brook’s Marcus Coker, Villanova’s Kevin Monangai, James Madison’s Dae’Quan Scott, New Hampshire’s Nico Steriti and Towson’s Terrance West – one of four returning watch list members.

While four CAA Football standouts were selected in April’s NFL Draft – the league’s most selections since five in 2010 – we’re also proud to note that a number of other players from around the league will to join draft selections Jared Smith (UNH/Seattle), Cooper Taylor (UR/New York Giants), Earl Watford (JMU/Arizona) and B.W. Webb (W&M/Dallas) at the next level after locking up free agent contracts and minicamp invitations.
