A few notes and some news to pass along this Thursday…A big congrats to our winners in the first-ever CAA Football Trivia contest on Twitter…@danefan, @WM_VA_Josh were our first two to respond with the correct answer. @Mr_MB then chimed in moments later…being the nice people we are here at CAA Football, we decided to award them a CAA Football Gear prize pack also!
We do want to point out that due to some conflicting information (thanks to @ThomasGemkow) that the real answers to our trivia questions were somewhat wrong. Our contest asked who are the two CAA Football athletes to sign Un-Drafted Free Agent contracts with the Denver Broncos…Maine’s Landis Williams was the correct answer. It was our belief that JMU’s Rockeed McCarter had signed a contract, but in reality he was only invited to the Broncos mini-camp this weekend. We apologize, and promise to do a better job of researching those answers in our upcoming trivia contests.
Maine, Massachusetts and Towson will all wrap up spring drills this weekend. Checkout each schools previews for those spring games below. Maine will be taking donations for “Airing It Out For Ashley” during its game…the Black Bears will also be hosting “Coffee with Coach Cosgrove” before Saturday’s scrimmage. Towson has a number of fan-friendly activities planned prior to and during its game Saturday. UMass will play its Spring Game Friday night, April 30, and host “Spring Fling” around the event. Tailgating begins at 4 p.m., with several promotions and giveaways on tap. You can also checkout Massachusetts’ Spring Game Preview video below.
News from around the league trickled in the last couple days. James Madison named its quarterback for the 2010 season, following the conclusion of the Dukes’ 2010 spring season. After entering the 2009 season with a “tandem” approach using Drew Dudzik and Justin Thorpe, head coach Mickey Matthews announced JMU will go with Dudzik at QB when it hosts Morehead State in the opener Sept. 4.
The 2009 CAA Football Offensive Player of the Year, Villanova’s Matt Szczur is a two-sport athlete for the Wildcats. Szczur has served as the baseball team’s starting rightfielder for most of the 2010 spring season, and recently became the 16th player this season in NCAA Division I Baseball to hit for the cycle. The accomplished running back/wide receiver threat during the fall, finished the 17-10 win at Temple this past Tuesday going 5-for-5 with four runs and a career-high five RBI. We are all keeping an eye on the Major League Baseball Draft projections as Szczur’s name continues to be among those mentioned as a high pick.
Thanks for the questions on Twitter, and please keep them coming. Check back throughout the remainder of the spring season for more student-athlete updates also.
2010 CAA Football…You Better Be Ready!!!
CAA Football Student-Athlete
Hello everyone, this will be the last post this spring considering our annual blue vs. white game was held this past Weekend. Saturday was a great day for the URI football program. Both sides of the ball came out
to prove a point. The blue team ended up with the final victory, but the white team was not very far behind. The atmosphere was extremely competitive, which led to extremely hard hits and explosive plays.
Our team ran our running test today to determine how much work each individual has to do during this summer. Our strength and conditioning is at its peak right now and I’m sure that we will only continue to improve throughout this upcoming summer break.
Everyone here is very excited for August to come and for us to show the progress we have made during this offseason. Come support us at our opener at Buffalo on September 2nd.
