CAA Football will chronicle all 10 of its programs each weekday leading up to the 2010 season kickoff Thursday, Sept. 2. Using the league’s preseason poll as a guide we will work our way up to the league favorite. Check back each day for information on your favorite team.
Today’s squad: The Maine Black Bears
The 2010 Black Bears return 17 starters and 42 letterwinners from last year’s team that came in second in the CAA North Division.
Among the returnees are a pair of quarterbacks in juniors Warren Smith and Chris Treister, who combined to lead the CAA with 247.6 yards per game through the air last season.
Senior Tyrell Jones is the team’s top returning wide receiver as he made 48 catches for 547 yards and six touchdowns last season.
The Maine running game should get a boost with the return of 2008 All-American Jared Turcotte, who missed all of 2009 with an injury. Fellow running backs Derek Session, Pushaun Brown and Roosevelt Boone will also look to contribute.
The Black Bears also return a more experienced line as they lost only one starter from last year’s unit, and will be led by senior Matt Barber and fellow starters Josh Spearin, Garret Williamson and Chris Howley.
On the defensive side, Maine returns a talented secondary, featuring 2009 All-CAA selection Steven Barker, who led the league in passes defended last season. Also returning for the secondary are Jerron McMillian and Trevor Coston, who both ranked among the top-20 in the nation in interceptions last season.
2009 All-CAA selection junior Donte Dennis highlights a strong linebacking unit for the Black Bears that returns Vinson Givans and senior Mark Masterson, who missed all but two games last season due to injury.
The defensive line returns four players who started at least one game last season in Raibonne Charles, Ryan Nani, Kris Enslen and Doug Alston.
Jordan Waxman, who handled the majority of the kicking duties last season, returns as do key special teams players Ryan McCrossan and Conor Keating.
Head coach Jack Cosgrove is in his 18th season leading the program. He is the program leader in career wins and is only seven wins away from 100 at the helm of the Black Bears.
Maine plays a challenging schedule with eight games against teams from the CAA, as well as two talented teams from the NEC and BCS member Syracuse.
