The early-season play of Massachusetts linebacker Tyler Holmes has landed him on the midseason edition of the the 2010 Buck Buchanan National Defensive Player of Year Award Watch List, sponsored by Fathead.com. Holmes’ addition to the 20-player list, released Oct. 4, moves CAA Football’s total up one to a national-best five after the league boasted four on the preseason release.
The Buchanan Award is in its 16th season and will be presented to the FCS National Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday, Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas – the night before the national championship game. CAA Football will be looking for a repeat in 2010, as James Madison defensive end Arthur Moats won the honor last season. Moats, who is among 40 CAA Football alums on NFL rosters this fall, became the second Duke and CAA Football student-athlete to log the honor.
2008 National Champion Richmond boasts three on the Watch List including seniors Eric McBride, Martin Parker and Justin Rogers. Parker finished 13th in the 2009 Buchanan voting while both McBride and Rogers earned several preseason honors. Senior Terence Thomas, who made eight tackles and a sack in Villanova’s National Champion win last season, was a newcomer to the preseason list in July. Holmes ranks among both the national and league leaders in tackles per game this season.
Below is an abbreviated bio on the league’s newest addition to the 2010 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List
|Massachusetts’ Tyler Holmes|
Tyler Holmes — Massachusetts — LB — Junior
Holmes, a 6-foot, 220-pound junior, doesn’t have prototypical size for a linebacker, but his instincts and relentless style make him highly productive. He helped Massachusetts to a big month of September, including a win over then-No. 4 William & Mary and a five-point loss at Michigan. He had a career-high 18 tackles against Towson. Overall, he has totaled 51 tackles, including eight for losses, intercepted three passes and forced two fumbles in five games. As a sophomore in 2009, Holmes was eighth in the FCS with 11 tackles per game and added four interceptions and a team-high nine passes defended.
The Buchanan Award Watch List will undergo another revision in the 2010 season scheduled for Oct. 25. Ballots will be sent to a panel of approximately 200 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries after the regular season on Nov. 22. The Sports Network also presents the Walter Payton and Eddie Robinson awards which are sponsored by Fathead. The Payton Award honors the FCS Player of the Year and the Robinson Award honors the FCS Coach of the Year. Those two awards, like the Buchanan, will be presented at the national awards banquet.
