RICHMOND, Va. – A pair of CAA Football rookies in William and Mary’s Luke Rhodes and Villanova’s John Robertson have been named to the Jerry Rice Watch List, as announced by The Sports Network this week. The tandem represents two of only 16 student-athletes to be selected to the season’s initial watch list for the award, which honors the FCS national freshman of the year.
Rhodes has made an immediate impact for the W&M line this season, turning in a team-high 41 tackles and 3.5 tackles for a loss through the fall’s first five games. The redshirt freshman, who ranks fifth in the league with 8.2 tackles per game, has also recorded three pass breakups and a forced fumble. Rhodes is coming off an eight-tackle effort this past weekend against Georgia State, which the Tribe held to just three points and 247 total yards, a showing that earned him CAA Player of the Week honors on Monday.
Robertson provides true meaning to the phrase “dual threat”, as the redshirt freshman has proven a force both in the air and on the ground for the Villanova this fall. The Wildcats’ starting quarterback has completed 55-of-97 pass attempts for 725 and four interceptions with just one interception. Robertson has also rushed for 321 yards on 62 carries with one touchdown in each of his first five games under center. After Villanova’s two-win season a year ago, Robertson has already helped lead the Wildcats to a 4-1 start in 2012.
Named for the legendary wide receiver who played in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State, the Jerry Rice Award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season. The list will increase to 20 finalists at that juncture.
