A pair of CAA Football players in Maine’s Justin Perillo and New Hampshire’s Harold Spears received nods on the College Football Performance Awards’ 2013 Tight End Award Watch List on Monday. The tandem joins 13 other league standouts who have been selected to CFPA positional award watch lists this spring.
Perillo was named First Team All-CAA last season after hauling in a career-high five touchdowns to go with 30 catches and 271 yards. The junior had a pair of breakout games in 2012, snagging seven receptions for two touchdowns and 68 yards against rival UNH on Oct. 20 before pulling down another pair of scores against Rhode Island in the 2012 finale. Perillo becomes the second Black Bear to earn a spot on a 2013 CFPA watch list after QB Marcus Wasilewski did so earlier this month.
Spears was selected to the All-CAA Third Team and College Sports Madness All-CAA Second Team in 2012 following a sophomore campaign that saw him compile 20 catches for 305 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games, including 10 starts. He was named CFPA National Tight End Performer of the Week on the heels of a career-high six receptions and a 26-yard score against Georgia State on Oct. 6 and would also earn honorable mention honors from the organization after turning in two touchdowns and a career-best 107 yards on just three receptions in the Wildcats’ win over Maine two weeks later. Spears has also excelled in the classroom, garnering CAA Football Academic All-Conference Team recognition a season ago.
The CFPA Watch List serves a rough guide to returning performers for the 2013 season. All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.
There are currently 111 CFPA recipients listed on official 2013 NFL rosters. More than 130 CFPA recipients have signed professional contracts, and 21 have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
The full list of 2013 recipients, including those CFPA FCS Awards honorees, will be announced on January 8, 2014. For more information, visit the CFPA website at collegefootballperformance.com.
