Maine’s Michael Cole and Villanova’s Rakim Cox and Antoine Lewis were named to College Football Performance Awards’ Defensive Line Award Watch List this week. The trio joins 15 other league standouts who have been selected to CFPA positional award watch lists to date this preseason.
Cole recorded seven sacks in just five games to go along with 20 tackles and a pair of forced fumbles as a junior in 2012. His 7.0 sacks unofficially led the league, as he did not appear in enough games to officially qualify for the recognition. Cole is currently just 6.5 sacks shy of tying the program’s all-time career record of 27.5 sacks.
Cox turned in 24 tackles, including 18 solo stops, en route to earning First Team All-CAA honors this past season. The rising senior’s 24 tackles included 7.0 for loss and a team-high 5.5 sacks. Cox would add one of the team’s two blocked kicks to his 2012 stats column as well.
A fellow senior, Lewis joined Cox on last year’s All-CAA First Team after tallying 50 tackles (29 solo) 8.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup. For his career, Lewis has played in 36 games and registered 142 tackles, including 76 solo, while compiling 16.0 tackles for loss, four sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, one pass break-up and one blocked kick.
The CFPA Watch List serves a rough guide to returning performers for the 2013 season. All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.
There are currently 111 CFPA recipients listed on official 2013 NFL rosters. More than 130 CFPA recipients have signed professional contracts, and 21 have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
The full list of 2013 recipients, including those CFPA FCS Awards honorees, will be announced on January 8, 2014. For more information, visit the CFPA website at collegefootballperformance.com.
