I’ve referenced wanting the 2014 season to come sooner than later too many times this offseason. It’s a legitimate problem during these dog days of summer especially now with numerous Twitter, Instagram and Photo-shopped “Countdown to Kickoff” campaigns that don’t seem to make things go faster. Hard to believe it’s already time to take a look at early preseason 2014 polls, right? Well, let’s dive in …
CAA Football led all of the FCS in the Athlon College Football Preseason Poll with seven teams ranked.
New Hampshire, which ended 2013 following an appearance in the national semifinals, came in at the No. 4 spot, followed by 2013 preseason #CAAFB favorite Villanova (8) and last year’s national runner up, the Tigers of Towson (10). William & Mary (15), Richmond (18), James Madison (22) and Delaware (23) round out the league’s teams in this poll.
In the 2014 Lindy’s College Football Preseason Poll, CAA Football again led the pack nationally with five schools selected. UNH earned the No. 5 spot, William & Mary came in at No. 12, Towson closely followed at No. 14, Villanova following the same trend at No. 16, and Richmond capped the group at No. 23.
In the Sporting News preseason 2014 poll, Villanova headlined the league’s teams in the No. 5 spot, followed by New Hampshire (No. 7), Richmond (No. 12), Towson (No. 15) and William & Mary (No. 23). The Big Sky conference tied the league with five selections in this poll.
Interestingly, in all three polls, three-time defending FCS beast North Dakota State was NOT picked to finish first. Eastern Washington is the unanimous choice across the board. 2013 CAA Football champion Maine surprisingly did not find itself ranked in any of the preseason polls shown above, though, like last season, the Black Bears didn’t receive much attention early in the year and things worked out just fine for coach Jack Cosgrove’s team.
The Sports Network preseason Top 25 poll won’t be released until August, but here’s a look back at the final 2013 poll.
